Farm Manager – 5 Functions and Problems

This article is about the functions and problems of a farm manager. It also explains the various problems a farm manager experiences. If you want to make a profit in any business, you need to involve the management of your farm. Even if you can’t manage your farm yourself, hire a farm manager or extension officer that can help you to carry out the management process of your farm.

A farm manager is someone that has the potential of taking risk, organisation, production, marketing, management and most important administration of the farm.

Functions Of A Farm Manager

There are many reasons for the necessity of someone standing out for the function of a farm manager. The functions it a farm manager is grouped into five major headings:

1. Organization

The farm manager is in charge of organizing a lot of things on the farm. One of the most important work is to choose a very good site or land for the farm. The farm manager is the one behind the type of crop to plants or livestock to rear. You should be behind the basis of that crop. Such that if you plant maize, the farm manager should know what the planting of maize is made for.

The farm manager determines the amount of money and cost that is required for a particular scale of production. He employs labour to that farm so that the workflow of the farm can be easier.

2. Production

Farm inputs, supplements, crops, insecticides and many other tools are used for production. The person would be in charge of the health of crops and animals and the housing of crops and animals.

The security of the farm is another thing that he should look out for. Some of the farms in Africa are not established to the extent that there is high security to the labourers on the farm.

For a livestock farm, he should ensure that he has sufficient hands-on feeds and livestock supplements. Also, there should be modern management of livestock instead of the traditional ones that would not be that fast, reliable and easy.

The farm manager should be behind the combination and accounting of feeds, crops, inputs and so many other important things necessary for the execution of the farm yields during harvest.

3. Evaluation

The farm manager will be in charge of anything that looks like a farm manager. The person explains, indicate and evaluate every important activity carried on the farm such that the record can be easily understood by anyone reading the farm records. The records do not seem like the only thing to look at when there are the book of account and book of operation of a farm within a certain period.

If you are a farm manager and you have different farms working under you, then you need to make sure that you are keeping records of a lot of things going on around the farm. This might be important later for a contract or any other thing in the future.

Even if there is a set goal or object to live dot that kind of farm, this is the time to know about that. So, here you must learn how to view, record, explain, indicate, observe the labor cost, staffing operations, farm cost and compare with your final revenue after the harvest of the agriculture produces.

4. Marketing

Just like how others are important, marketing is also very important. The farm manager should be behind the whole marketing. This doesn’t mean that he should be behind the selling in the market but monitoring the selling limits, factors, demand and supply and things as such is very important.

He should avoid hiring middlemen and use trade channels that will increase the price of the farm produce. The farm manager is behind the number of products to sell, where to sell them and the price to sell them. If this kind of crop needs to be processed, the farm manager must see to everything in the monitoring process of the farm.

However, marketing your produce around might be somehow difficult. Doing this alone if you do not have the basic idea is not to be spoken about. This is the reason a marketplace llikeshas been created.

This is a marketplace where you can sell any of your crop produce and livestock produce for free. Just go to the website or download the forms app on your play store and apple store. Place your adverts for free and start reaching out to your customers from there.

5. Administration

Finally, becoming the administrator of the farm. This is not an easy task but can be simplified once you know what you are doing. Even it would become the simplest part of your farm management category if you know where and what to point to.

It entails the proper arrangement of labourers welfare, adequate relationship with labourers and customers, other factors relating to becoming an entrepreneur. This is what is shown mainly in this region.
