3 Environmental Factors Affecting Crop Yield

There are lots of factors affecting crop yield and our environment has a huge effect on the growth of agricultural produce. Both livestock and crops depend on several climatic factors to survive.

Without the adequacy of these factors, there is a probable loss of agricultural yield during harvest.

Climatic and environmental factors are the average weather conditions of a certain location over 35 plus years. If the climatic factors of locations have been monitored very well, there is a probability that this will be the same factor that will be for at least 35 years.

Mainly, there are their factors affecting crop yield

  1. Climatic Factors

2. Edaphic Factors

3. Biotic Factors.

3 Environmental Factors Affecting Crop Yield

These factors determine the growth of plants. They serve as the main qualifying factors for the limited growth of some plants in a country, while there is a better thriving factor for the plant in another habitat. So,  let’s delve into the factor that determines the survival and growth of Agricultural products.

1. Climatic Factors:

This is one of the major factors affecting crop yield. Climate Determines the kind of crops and animals that will be grown in a particular habitat. The condition of these climatic factors at a certain time might not be the same but it will follow certain trends. These conditions include:

a. Rainfall: The amount of rainfall that is released over a certain period is a huge determination for survival. Some plants can survive any rainfall situation, while some plants need a particular amount of rainfall. A minimal or an exceeding amount of rainfall can cause huge problems to their yields.

Rainfall determines the distribution of crops and animals. It is the powerhouse for seed germination. Most importantly it is the main character that determines the type of vegetation in a particular area.

b. Drought: On the other hand is an insufficient amount of rainfall over a certain period. This drought doesn’t mean a loss in Agric produce. Even some plants would highly survive in drought instead of the normal rainfall. However, most crops have a reduced growth during the dry season. Animals suffer from these as well because they have less water and less food to eat. This condition is one of the recent in Africa.

Mainly, the circulation of food will be below. There is a decrease in production. Lower resistance to plants and disease as they are easily affected. Even if some plants survive this drought, the low nutrient composition is probably.

c. Temperature: This is also one of the factors affecting crop yield. Some seeds and seedlings grown a certain have grown at temperature degree. With inadequate temperature, they tend to die easily.

This is a loss for the yield of the plants. Also, the performance and balance of livestock are based on the temperature they fall into.

d. Wind: One of the most important agents of pollination and fruit dispersal is wind. It helps in the separation of seeds and regrowth in another location. This way there can be more yield than expected (all things equal). On the other hand, is the negative effect of wind, which is a wind storm. This wind storm can destroy crops and cause evapotranspiration later on.

e. Sunlight: Sunlight is the food required for plants survival. It is one of the main features of photosynthesis. Also, it helps in the evapotranspiration of plants. In livestock as well, it has a big deal of importance. It helps to determine the productivity of cultivated crops.

2. Edaphic Factors:

Edaphic factors are the factors that affect the kind of soil for plants. It is almost one of the factors affecting crop yield. Some soil is known to be very acidic while some are alkaline. Just like this contact occurs in soil, there is this requirement for plants as well.

If a certain would is too acidic or too alkaline for the patient, it might cause a big disadvantage.

There are still many edaphic factors to look at as well. From the texture of the soil to the kind of soil, turbidity, percolation, capillarity and so many others to look at.

3. Biotic Factors:

Lastly on the factors affecting crop yield are biotic factors. These are the living factors that surround crops and animals. These living factors go from the farmer, disease, pest, weeds and many other living factors that determine the livelihood of plants.

Some of these factors are ready to retard the growth of these crops and livestock. This is due to the relationship shown by them.

This might be parasitic, mutualism, commensalism and so many other factors that will damage or strengthen the plants.

All these factors must be watched for the effective and sufficient yield of plants.
